Lost A Pet?

Steps to Take if You Lose Your Pet

Losing a pet can be scary and stressful, but you’re not alone.
At the York County SPCA, we’re here to help you through the process and give you the best chance of bringing your pet home. Acting quickly can make a big difference, so we’ve put together some simple steps and helpful resources to guide you along the way.

Initial Steps

We update our Found Animals listing frequently, so please continue to check until you locate your pet.
Submitting a Lost Pet Report with the York County SPCA equips our team with the information needed to assist in your search and identify any matching pets brought in or reported by others.

Send a message to Find Toby with information about your pet, where they were lost, and your contact information. Be sure to include a photo with your message.

You can also contact other animal reunification or community sites such as PawBoost or Nextdoor.

Petco Love Lost (previously Finding Rover) helps reunite lost pets with their families by using picture-matching technology. Submit a report with a photo to make your pet visible to finders.

Additional Steps

Post flyers/pictures in parks, businesses, post offices, etc. in the area your pet was last seen as well as in surrounding areas.
Create a concise ad that includes your pet’s type, color, size, breed, and any distinguishing characteristics. Include a clear photograph to draw attention to your ad and help people quickly recognize your pet.

Sometimes, people who find pets will first take them to a nearby clinic rather than an animal shelter, so it’s important to alert local clinics about your missing pet to widen your search efforts. If you live outside of York County, you should also consider contacting your local animal shelter or humane organization.

Found A Pet?

Steps to Take if You Find a Pet

You can significantly increase the chances of reuniting a pet with their family by following the steps below.

Step 1

Review Shelter Admissions Policy

Before bringing an animal to the YCSPCA, please review our Shelter Admissions Policy (for cats) and Stray Canine Intake Policy (for dogs) to learn when and how we can accept pets into our care.

Step 2

Submit a Found Report to the YCSPCA

Submitting a Found Pet Report equips our team with the information needed to assist in the search for the pet owners and identify any matching lost pet reports.

Step 3

Contact Find Toby

Send a message to Find Toby with information about the pet, where they were found, and your contact information. Be sure to include a photo with your message.

Step 4

Register the Pet with PetCo Love Lost

If you don’t see any lost posts matching the pet you found, submit a report with a photo to make your post visible to pet parents searching for their lost pet.

The owner may have posted their pet as missing, so be sure to check other animal reunification or community sites such as PawBoost or Nextdoor.
