Our VISION
Supported by a network of passionate ambassadors and diversified funding, the York County SPCA is positioned as a leading voice for animal welfare, respected as an essential service provider, and is the area’s trusted animal resource center for keeping people and pets together.

Core Values
In 2024, the York County SPCA’s board and leadership team came together to establish a set of core values that reflect our mission and guide every aspect of our work. These values – compassion, integrity, resilience, collaboration, lifesaving, excellence – serve as the foundation for our decisions, programs, and interactions with the community. By defining what we stand for, we ensure that our organization remains focused, transparent, and aligned with the needs of the animals and people we serve.

Central to this value is that employees and volunteers should assume positive intent in our interactions with stakeholders – including colleagues, volunteers, customers, donors, and community members.

Resilience
At the York County SPCA, employees and volunteers experience the emotional impact of life and death daily. We believe that creating a trusting, fun, and enjoyable environment is essential for the well-being of our staff, volunteers, and the animals in our care. We strive to incorporate playfulness, joy, and positivity into our daily operations, whether through enrichment activities for the animals, team-building exercises for staff, or community events that celebrate the bond between humans and animals.
Work-Life Balance
We recognize the importance of maintaining a healthy equilibrium between work responsibilities and personal well-being. We prioritize work-life balance for our staff and volunteers. Caring for animals is emotionally rewarding but also physically and mentally demanding. Therefore, we encourage employees to disconnect from work, we support time off for self-care, and we will continue to provide resources (and bad animal puns) for stress management.
Support & Self-Care
We encourage all employees to use the bulk of their paid time off each year. If a staff member or volunteer starts to feel the weight of compassion fatigue, we urge them to speak with their direct supervisor or another colleague so that we can support one another as a team.

Building Bridges and Creating Partnerships Allows Us to Save More Lives
Collaboration
At the York County SPCA, building partnerships with other animal service organizations, veterinary professionals, volunteers, the nonprofit community, and corporate partners ensures we maintain a 90% or greater save rate and allows us to advance our mission. Empower & Grow
We empower staff, volunteers, and stakeholders to make a positive difference in the lives of animals through education, training, and opportunities for growth and development. Cross-training and stepping outside your comfort zone and job description is our way of doing business. Working together as a team helps us remain adaptable to changing circumstances and needs within the community and the animal services landscape and ensures we can continue to meet emerging challenges.

At the York County SPCA, we strive to save every animal’s life that can be saved.
Every Life Matters
We do not believe in the euthanasia of healthy, thriving animals to create shelter space. We save lives by delivering essential services that provide animal care and public education, promoting responsible pet ownership, playing our role in public health and safety, and preventing animal suffering through an aggressive spay/neuter program.
Advocating for Animals
As an animal care and services organization, we advocate for those in our community who have no voice. We work hard to stand up for animals and provide for their well-being with shelter, veterinary services, behavioral enrichment, foster programs, human service programs, cruelty investigation and prosecution, and adoption.

At the York County SPCA, we stand up for our animals who otherwise wouldn’t have a voice or are unable to help themselves. The staff, board, and volunteers work hard every day to build communities where a harmonious relationship exists between ALL York County residents and animals. The staff and volunteers at the York County SPCA are amazing people. It can be a tough job, but we are very passionate about animal welfare and the mission of the York County SPCA.
