About me

With beautiful green eyes and white boots, this younger senior lady is Socks. Socks came into the shelter due to her owner’s decline in health. She had been living with her previous family since she was a kitten, but she’s taken the shelter adjustment in stride! Socks was the semi-independent but affectionate companion of her caretaker; the sort of girl who will rub up, sleep in your lap, and curl up by your side, then head out to window-watch. It took no time at all for her to greet staff and volunteers with purrs and head butts.

Socks has been around grandchildren and did well, even taking naps with them, though she will head out to do her own thing if she is overwhelmed with the noise. Socks did live with other cats and was nervous around them, and she was described by her previous family as fearful of dogs (though she did not live with one). Socks is looking for a like-minded friend who can help her lose a bit of weight despite her lackadaisical temperament, so she can enjoy many more years to come of couch sitting and bird watching. If that sounds like your speed, Socks is your girl.

When Lauren arrived at the York County SPCA in October 2025, she weighed just 26 pounds, nearly half her healthy weight. The two-and-a-half-year-old pit bull was severely emaciated, with parasites, organ damage, and a heart murmur caused by extreme neglect. Our medical team followed a careful recovery plan to stabilize her and rebuild her strength. Lauren got her second chance, but her story is not rare. In 2024, YCSPCA officers conducted 1,983 welfare checks, leading to 503 cruelty investigations and 102 convictions.
